Janamitra Devan, a McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) senior fellow located in McKinsey & Company's Shanghai office in China, has long standing experience in Asia and North America. He has led several intensive knowledge projects and studies at McKinsey and comes from both an academic and consulting background. Devan began his career in Asia as a consultant for Ernst & Young in Singapore. He then took an academic appointment in the US as an assistant professor at Middlebury College, where he taught economics and finance. In 1992, Devan re-entered consulting, this time in the US, with Standard & Poor's DRI/McGraw Hill where he eventually led its Asia consulting services. In 1996, he joined the World Bank as the program manager for the Middle East and North Africa in its Foreign Direct Investment Advisory Services. His work has brought him to the intersection of both the private and public sectors in several countries in particular: Pakistan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China, India, Iran, and Thailand.
Prior to joining MGI, Devan was the Director of Global Operations of the Strategy Practice where he led several strategy knowledge efforts and was an expert resource in corporate strategy for several clients. He also is a leader of a new initiative in McKinsey to better understand the drivers of corporate performance. Devan has published extensively and currently works with several teams to bring the MGI perspective to Asia. Devan earned a B.A. in quantitative business analysis, and an M.B.A., and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He was born and grew up in Singapore.
